ULTRA TRAIL SNOWDONIA

By Lasse Fins. 7th place finish at the 100k Ultra Trail Snowdonia on 17th May 2025.

Somewhere between sweat and stone, the mountain decides who you are.

I came to Wales looking for elevation, for effort, for something raw. Snowdonia delivered all of it, with unexpected heat and unforgiving terrain.

The day started steady. I focused on holding back, on not burning too soon. The plan was patience. Five kilometres in, that plan fell — literally. I caught a rock, crashed, and snapped a pole. My hip took a hit. For the next two climbs, I was one pole short and wincing every step. That kind of thing gets in your head. But like most pain in long races, it eventually goes quiet.

Through it all, the Portal shorts and socks held strong. No blisters, no blood, no distractions — just gear that did its job without complaint. That’s rare, and worth mentioning.

Things turned around, for a while. Then came Snowdon. The course filled with 50k runners grinding through their own suffering. Navigation became dodging, weaving, negotiating space. And then the heat really hit. Everything slowed. Focus narrowed to simply moving forward.

At 80km, the aid station felt like salvation. Time well spent: fluids, salt, sugar, a moment in the shade. From there, I found something like rhythm again. Not fast, but steady. Wales passed by in wide sweeps of green, sheep, and granite. The last 20km were quiet. Honest. Just me, the trail, and the ongoing conversation in my head about not stopping.

This race had everything we look for in ultras: challenge, chaos, community. It’s not the result that lingers. It’s the shared struggle, the wild terrain, the reminder that you can always keep going. Everyone’s fighting their own battle out there.
